Is Science Useful?
The question of whether science is helpful or not can be difficult to answer. Scientists are urged to pursue their interests. However, this may result in research that is focused on a broad range of subjects, some which may not be directly beneficial to society. For example, an important aspect of science is the creation of theories and making predictions that can be tested. These discoveries are often used in the development of new technologies, such as medical devices, drugs and renewable energy.
To be effective Science must also address issues and problems that affect human wellbeing. This requires collaboration with key stakeholders in order to identify their needs, define clear goals and develop plans that address those requirements. Many scientific initiatives are lacking this collaboration, and instead focus on developing knowledge with no direct connection to society. Additionally the effects of research are usually not analyzed and monitored in an effective manner.
There are a variety of strategies that have been developed to generate usable research which includes the concept of translational ecology (TE), which emphasizes the necessity of scientists to think about and respond to the research context. TE also stresses the importance of engaging the users in a meaningful manner throughout the research process and promoting decision-making based on learning such as adaptive management which is widely used by natural land and resource managers.
Students often struggle to choose a topic that is both interesting as well being scholarly, especially when professors have time limitations.
